Clay Days

May was a month of exploring Clay.

Thanks to popular demand the artists focused multiple Art+Nature classes on creating & finishing clay sculptures.

Art+Nature Clay Day I:

Artists engage air dry clay outside for the first time.

Artist uses natural materials like pinecones
and seed pods in her clay sculpture.

Sometimes artists view their
work from various perspectives.

Precision is key for this artist's work.

Art+Nature Clay Day II:

Some clay beads Katherine made from
stamping Eucalyptus seed pods to create
beautiful & unique flower-like designs. 

Artist works with both white &
terra cotta Das air dry clay

Done for the day: artist completes step one of the
process with the creation of a mini 'house' sculpture
with Eucalyptus seed pods as structural supports.

Preparing sculptures with a sand
paper block to smooth rough edges.

Artists begin the final step of the process:
Painting the clay sculptures with tempera paint.

Artist creates a 'Spaceship' with modeling
clay and a skewer.

Terrariums

Collecting natural charcoal - ideal for filtering
water in our terrariums AND for drawing!

Sorting through natural treasures: rocks,
seed pods, pinecones, flowers, charcoal bits, etc.

After finishing the terrariums we had extra time so we
moved on to the next activity and pulled out the oil
pastels to experiment with a new medium
